Chapter Ten

Kane

I heard water running. Where am I? I lifted my head off the cold floor and winced. My head throbbed. Well, I wasn’t in the hospital or on a concrete prison floor, so that was something. A large pair of feet covered in black boots appeared in my line of sight. The person squatted next to me. “It’s a good thing we’re closed on Mondays,” Chet said.

“My head hurts.” I moaned, gathering the strength to sit up. Finally, I managed to get my torso off the floor.

He handed me a small wet towel. “For your head.”

“Thanks.”

“Someone clocked you one, I see,” Chet said, rising to his full height.

“Your son’s an asshole.” I dabbed at the back of my head.

Chet laughed. “I’d like to blame his mother for how he turned out, but I was the same way when I was his age. Younger, even. Experience taught me a better way to be.”

“Would this experience have anything to do with prison?”

“I’d be lying if I said no. Here.” Chet offered me his hand for a boost off the floor. I grabbed it and he pulled me to my feet. A wave of the woozies washed over me and I used the bar to keep from falling. The tsunami passed after a few seconds, allowing me to stand without assistance.

“If you called the police, can you tell me now so I can get a head start? Better yet, can you take me to the FBI field office?”

“You’re giving up?”

“I’ve given it a lot of thought. So far this week, I’ve been in a bus accident, shot at, nearly drowned in shit, and now bashed over the head. I’m about done.”

“What will happen to you when you turn yourself in?” Chet sat on one of the bar stools.

“I’ll likely be murdered by whoever ordered the attack on the prison bus. I don’t know what the news said about the accident, but it was a hit.”

“The news said there was evidence of gunfire.”

I nodded. “I’m not armed, by the way, and never was. I fled the scene because I didn’t feel like dying.”

“But you do now?”

I shrugged. “I don’t want anyone to get hurt because of me.”

Chet nodded. “You know, when you first walked into my bar, I recognized you as the cop who arrested my son. Not as a fugitive. You asked if I was pissed and my answer is still the same. No. You were right to arrest him. I’m the one who called the police that night.”

“I thought she did.”

“That’s what she said.” We both chuckled. “I dialed the phone, she talked. Ripped the phone right out of my hand. I thought she was going to hang up, but—”

“She surprised you.”

“Yeah. I still would’ve called.”

“I’m not going to ask why because I think I can guess.”

“Good, because I’m not going to tell you. I’m helping you out because you helped Lucy, Jacob’s wife. You went out of your way to follow up with her and make sure she was doing okay.
